Lake Tahoe
Nestled in the Sierra Nevada mountains, Lake Tahoe is a stunning alpine lake that beckons with crystal-clear waters and breathtaking mountain vistas. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker hitting the slopes or lakeside sunbather, Tahoe offers a year-round playground for nature enthusiasts and adventure lovers alike.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and Fall are the best times to go if you want to avoid the crowds. Winter is best for those into snowsports, while Summer is best for great weather, but it is also the most crowded.
Lake Tahoe is 1645 feet (501 meters) deep with an average depth of 1000 feet, which makes it the second deepest lake in the United States and 16th in the world.
Where to Stay
This alpine lake has four shores, each offering its own unique options. Which is best for you will depend on what you expect from your trip or vacation.
SOUTH SHORE
This is the center of all the action, with the casino strip, countless restaurants, and plenty of shopping. This section of the lake also offers just enough nature to feel like you are in the mountains.
NORTH SHORE
This area offers a perfect combination of amenities in towns like Kings Beach, which is surrounded by great beaches and forested areas. There is plenty of fun to be had, but this shore has a more relaxed vibe.
WEST SHORE
This is all about nature, and most accommodations are surrounded by dense forest, making you feel like you are at a mountain lake. This area is best known for its vacation rentals, along with some gorgeous beaches and hiking trails.
EAST SHORE
This area is fairly barren and devoid of accommodations. This is a great place to visit as the road along the shore is scenic, with the best sunset in Tahoe and great beaches along the way.
Lake Tahoe is not a man-made lake and was formed over two million years ago through faulting of the Earth’s crust.
