Some of the ski resorts on the north side of the lake will likely open early, but we recommend not planning on a snowy getaway.
Normally, North Lake Tahoe is a draw for its amazing shoreline that stretches from Common’s Beach in Tahoe City to Sand Harbor to the east, but after October in Tahoe, the beaches are quiet for the season.
If you are traveling with your dog, the good news is that Sand Harbor becomes a dog-friendly beach after the crowds leave for the summer.
The only problem is that the daytime temperatures are too chilly to catch some rays or for any water sports or recreation.
If you end up with a patch of warmer weather, North Lake Tahoe is home to some great trails, including Monkey Rock Trail for hikers and the Truckee River Trail for mountain bikers and road cyclists.

November offers a chance to score accommodations at seasonally low prices, and it’s a good time to hit the trails closer to the lake’s shore.
Temperatures may be chilly during the day, but with a little preparation and a few extra layers, you can explore many of Lake Tahoe’s top attractions without the typical crowds.
Unfortunately, it is too cold to spend time in the water or engage in water sports like boating or water skiing, and it is too late in the season for a Lake Tahoe camping trip.
A visit to Lake Tahoe in November has its pluses and minuses, and we included a pros and cons list listed below to help you decide if this is the right time to visit.
Things to do in Lake Tahoe in November
There is plenty of fun things to do in Lake Tahoe in November, but some of the typical Lake Tahoe summer activities will be done for the season.
The top activity for a November visit is to hit the trails and enjoy a hike along the lake’s shore or to stunning viewpoints on the Rubicon or Eagle Lake Trails.
This time of year is also a perfect opportunity to explore some of Lake Tahoe’s top attractions, as the crowds will be minimal at Emerald Bay or the Taylor Creek Visitors Center.
Another fun activity in November is to check out the local craft beer scene, as there are many amazing breweries located around the lake, where you can sample a flight or pick up some bottles to go.
Sometimes the most fun thing to do in Lake Tahoe is to stay in and enjoy the comforts of a rental cabin with a hot tub, where you can beat the cold with a steamy soak with views of the lake.
If you want to dust off the skis or your snowboard, several ski resorts in the Tahoe area may open as early as mid-November if the weather permits.
You may not get to ride the jet ski or swim in the lake, but you will get a chance to have some quality family time or a romantic stay during your Lake Tahoe vacation along the lake shore.
Lake Tahoe Skiing in November
Some years, skiers and snowboarders begin hitting the slopes as early as mid-November, while in some years, the ski resorts do not open until late December.
If you are hoping to get some early-season skiing in Lake Tahoe, you may have to wait until later in the month when there is a higher probability of the resorts being able to make enough snow to open.
Many resorts can use snow guns to lay down a base of fresh powder, but they are at the mercy of the weather, and a few warmer days or some rain can delay the start of the season.
If you are considering heading to Lake Tahoe in November for a skiing or snowboarding trip, you must either wait until the resorts commit to opening dates or book early and take the risk.
Hiking Lake Tahoe in November
Hiking can be one of the best activities to enjoy on a trip to Lake Tahoe in November, but the trail conditions and the weather can make hitting the trails difficult.
While the weather is chilly in November, there are plenty of days during the month when the temperatures at lake level are more than comfortable enough for a good hike.
Some amazing trails near the lake shore will take you to some of Tahoe’s top destinations, including the Tahoe East Shore trail, which leads to the gorgeous Sand Harbor.
You will want to avoid any trails that head into the higher elevations surrounding the lake, as the temperatures will get considerably colder the higher you climb.
It’s also important to note that the trails can get muddy and slippery and that there may be snow on sections of the trail after a winter storm.
If you are planning to hike during your trip to Lake Tahoe in November, you will want to bring extra layers and a rain jacket and plan your route carefully to avoid too much exposure to the cooler temperatures.
Go kayaking at Sand Harbor
You may think it’s too late to get out on the water for some kayaking, but November offers a unique opportunity to glide across the surface of the water without all the boat wakes you will face during a summer paddle.
The water temperatures will be very cold, but if you wear a wet or a dry suit and take some precautions, you may get a glassy day on the water.
Sand Harbor is famous for its underwater rock garden, which is visible through Lake Tahoe’s crystal-clear water.
To experience this beautiful stretch of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline in November, you must bring your own gear and kayak, as the rental companies will be closed for the season.
Take a boat cruise
One way to beat the cold but still experience Lake Tahoe at its best is to take a boat cruise aboard the MS Dixie II paddle ship.
You can opt for the sunset cruise, where you will be treated to dinner and some live music, or opt for a daytime trip to Emerald Bay, where you will get a narrated tour of the history of Lake Tahoe.
This is a chance to get out on the water for a fun and relaxing trip without exposure to the cold winds that rip across the water in November.
Check out some live music
If you are looking for a fun night out during your visit to Lake Tahoe in November, take advantage of some of the amazing live performances ranging from open mics to large concerts.
Although Lake Tahoe’s summer concert series will be over for the season, there is still lots of great talent performing in November.
No matter what night of the week, you can head to McP’s Taphouse for live music, and they never charge a cover.
You can enjoy some pints and a pizza at Aleworks Taphouse, along with live music performances by local musicians.
Many top-level musicians and bands also perform larger shows at the casinos on the South Lake Tahoe strip at the Stateline.
If you are in South Lake Tahoe on a Monday, Basecamp Tahoe South hosts an open mic night where you can sit by the fire and enjoy a cold pint.
For a classy alternative, head to the Mountain Bar at Harvey’s to hear the musical stylings of their Dueling Piano Show every Friday and Saturday at 8:30 pm.
Go on a scenic drive around the lake
One of the best ways to beat the weather during your visit to Lake Tahoe in November is to go for a scenic drive around the lake.
We love to make this loop around the lake and make stops along the way at our favorite spots, including lunch at Sunnyside Restaurant for the amazing view and their delicious fried zucchini and fish tacos.
You can spread the trip out over a full day and watch a gorgeous Lake Tahoe sunset from Zephyr Cove along the eastern shoreline.
This is the perfect way to see the best lakeside trails and the top natural attractions all in one quick drive.
Plus, you can limit your exposure to the elements if it’s too cold or if it starts to sprinkle.

There are several amazing tubing parks in the Tahoe Basin, with moving carpet lifts to take you to the top and special lanes carved into the snow for a controlled descent.
Another option is to visit one of the ski resorts in Lake Tahoe that feature children’s tubing and sledding areas so the whole family can have a good time.
Sledding or tubing at Palisades is one of the best things to do in North Lake Tahoe in November.

Visit the Hot Springs
If you plan to explore the trails and popular destinations like Emerald Bay while visiting Lake Tahoe in November, it will be chilly.
The best way to warm your bones and relax your muscles is to go for a soak in one of the natural hot springs around Tahoe.
The area has several options ranging from free hot springs on Federal Land to private soaking tubs at historic resorts.
When we are craving a long relaxing soak after a hard trail run or hike, we like to make the short drive to Carson Hot Springs, where we can get a two-hour pass for under $20 per person.
Another fun option is to book a night at David Walley’s Resort with its seven hot springs that feed their outdoor pool.
This is also a perfect way to recover after a day of skiing or snowboarding if the resorts open in November.

Valhalla Holiday Faire
If you love to kick off your holiday preparations as early as November, make sure to visit the Valhalla Holiday Faire.
This craft fair and holiday celebration is the perfect way to celebrate the season and support local artisan vendors.
Can you swim in Lake Tahoe in November?
Yes, you can swim in Lake Tahoe in November, but you will need to wear a wetsuit and show up with a way to get warm immediately after getting out of the water.
If you are not prepared, getting in and out of the lake’s frigid water in November can be dangerous and should always be attempted with others.
While getting in the water on a sunny day in November may be tempting, it’s best to stick to the hot tub at your cabin.
We soaked our feet in the cold water during our last visit in November, but it only lasted a few minutes before we headed to the car to warm our toes.
Pros of Visiting Lake Tahoe in November
There are some big pluses and minuses of visiting Lake Tahoe in November. Still, the positives outweigh any negatives, making it one of our favorite months to visit.
This list of the pros and cons should help you decide if you should head up the mountain to Lake Tahoe this November.
Fewer Crowds
November represents a lull between the busy summer travel season and winter skiing, meaning Lake Tahoe is fairly quiet.
If you head out to hike, there will be plenty of parking, and you will most likely not see many people on the trail.
With fewer crowds, you will have no trouble scoring a reservation at a restaurant, and there will be next to zero traffic near the popular destinations around the lake.
Cheaper Accommodations
Although we love visiting and staying in Tahoe in the summer, the prices can get out of control.
One of the top perks for visiting in November is that you can score accommodations at rock-bottom prices.
This means you can enjoy the savings or take advantage of this seasonally low pricing to book that upgraded room with a view of the lake you have been dreaming about.
You can also book a charming cabin in the woods with a hot tub for around half the price it would cost during the summer or the ski season.
Fall Colors
If you arrive during the first half of November, you will be treated to some additional pops of color across the already gorgeous landscapes.
Many of the deciduous trees in the area, including Quaking Aspens, will be showing off their Fall colors, adding some contrast to the evergreen pine trees.
To see the Fall colors at their best, visit the Taylor Creek Visitors Center or head south to Hope Valley.
Start of the Ski Season
If you are a skiing or snowboarding fanatic, you will want to hit the slopes the second the first resort in Lake Tahoe opens.
Luckily, there are years when the temperatures cool down early, allowing the ski resorts to start making snow to add to the base from early winter storms.
Pack your snow gear and bring your skis or snowboard in case the ski resorts open in November.
Holiday Festivities
A trip to Lake Tahoe in November will get you into the holiday spirit, with the cooler temperatures, holiday festivals, and the chance of snow flurries.
If you are up for some holiday cheer, head to the annual tree lighting at Heavenly Village, where you can marvel at the 65-foot tree lit up in all its glory while sipping on some hot cocoa.
Another must-visit during this start to the holiday season is to do some shopping for local crafts and artisan goods at the Valhalla Holiday Faire, where you may get a visit from Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Driving to Lake Tahoe in November
If you plan to travel to Lake Tahoe in November, you will need to drive an all-wheel drive vehicle with snow tires or carry chains for your two-wheel drive car.
November represents the start of the snow season in Lake Tahoe, and there is a chance that a winter storm can roll through, bringing a blanket of fresh powder onto the roads.
This means you can get stuck if you show up unprepared, so pack some car chains and test putting them on before heading up the mountain.
📢 LOCAL TIP: If you’re driving to Tahoe from the Bay Area, you can avoid the crazy traffic if you leave on a Thursday instead of Friday afternoon.
