BEST Things to Do at Apple Hill 2023 (Ultimate Guide)
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Apple Hill season starts in mid-August and goes up until Christmas, with the busiest time being weekends in October.
- The best things to do in Apple Hill are to visit the apple farms for apple picking, enjoy some apple treats such as apple donuts, and go apple cider or wine tasting.
- Our favorites are Rainbow Orchards for its rustic farm feel (plus apple donuts!) and Boa Vista Orchards for the apple-tasting and delicious apple treats.
When the leaves start to change color, and the weather starts to cool, it means it’s time to head to Apple Hill for some apple donuts and other tasty treats.
Besides delicious food, there is so much to do, from apple tasting to visiting a pumpkin patch.
The hardest part of visiting Apple Hill is deciding which of these amazing activities to do and which apple farms to visit.
Having spent most of my teenage and young adult years living in the foothills just a stone’s throw from Apple Hill, I spent my Fall days sipping on cider and eating apple donuts while exploring the orchards.
If you are a first-timer or want to discover more of what this area has to offer, this guide covers all the best things to do at Apple Hill so that your day will be as delicious as it is fun.

Best Time to go to Apple Hill
The best time to visit Apple Hill is on weekdays after October when the crowds start to subside.
The busiest time of the season is October, and the crowds can be a bit of a turn-off for those that dislike wading through people and waiting in long lines.
If this is you, visit in mid-September or wait till after Halloween.
When does Apple Hill open in 2023?
The farms in Apple Hill officially open for the season on Labor Day weekend and stay open all the way to December 23, 2023.
A few farms open up on August 12th (such as High Hill Ranch) while others open around August 26th or later.
What Time Does Apple Hill Open?
Most of the farms at Apple Hill open at 8:00 am on weekends, with a few that open later from 9:00 to 10:00 am.
Many farms are only open on Fridays through Sundays, while some are open 7 days a week, so make sure to call or check online if you plan on visiting midweek.
If you plan on visiting on the weekend, come early to beat the crowds and find good parking.
Best Things to Do in Apple Hill

Visit the Apple Farms
One of the best things to do in Apple Hill is to visit several of the working farms and walk in their orchards.
I love visiting their farmstands and selecting my favorite varieties of apples to take home with me to either eat by themselves or to make a homemade pie.
If you are not sure which type of apples you like, many farms even offer samples (such as Boa Vista) so you can compare and contrast the different varieties before you buy.
Visiting the farms and orchards will content you with the traditions and heritage of this historic apple-growing area.
The list of the best Apple Hill Farms can be found here.
Go Apple Picking

The best time to go apple picking at one of the participating farms is from mid-September to the start of October when the largest amount of varieties of apples are available at the same time.
Don’t worry if your trip to pick apples is after September, as there are still plenty of varieties to pick through late October.
Apple harvest varies by variety and starts in late July with Ginger Gold and Premier Honeycrisp apples and ends in Late October with the Pink Lady and Arkansas Black harvests.
This is one of the best things to do at Apple Hill that you shouldn’t miss.

Shop for some local products
Part of why I love visiting Apple Hill is to shop for amazing artisan food products, crafts, toys, and artwork.
You can shop for jars of homemade apple butter or pickled garlic at one of the orchard’s markets and then visit a craft fair where you can purchase anything from handmade teddy bears to Christmas ornaments.
There are countless items for sale that can get you in the spirit of the season or will make great presents for the Holidays.
Best places to stop at Apple Hill for some local products
- High Hill Ranch – Several varieties of fudge from the fudge factory, housemade apple wines, and handmade unique crafts from over 75 vendors. I love stopping by here on weekdays and tend to avoid the weekends as the crowds here can get pretty crazy.
- Boa Vista Vineyards – Apple salsa, hard apple cider, their famous apple or pumpkin butter. My favorite thing about this place is being able to try their full line of apple varieties before purchasing, making sure you get the best apple for your taste.
Drink Apple Cider

A new tradition is forming for many people visiting Apple Hill, which started when hard ciders started to gain in popularity.
Apple Hill is home to several very skilled craft cider producers that offer up pints made from apples picked right from the trees in their backyard.
If you do not like to imbibe alcoholic beverages, grab a steaming cup of spiced hot cider that will warm your bones on a cold day at Apple Hill.
Where to Drink Apple Cider
- Grandpa’s Cellar- Get a cup of hot apple cider with one of their apple dumplings
- North Canyon Cider Co. – Amazing hard ciders from the Barsotti juice family
- Hidden Star Camino – They pour 16 taps of flavored hard and non-alcoholic ciders
Devour some Apple Treats

Without a doubt, the most exciting part of visiting Apple Hill is all of the delicious apple desserts that you can try.
I mean, did you even go to Apple Hill if you didn’t have an apple donut or two?
Apple season means it’s time to loosen up the belt and prepare yourself to eat every imaginable fried, baked, or dipped apple concoction you can imagine.
These apple treats are worth the trip alone and are the star of any trip up the mountain.
When driving from Sacramento to Reno or Lake Tahoe in October, we always stop by Apple Hill for our sweet treats.
Where to stop at Apple Hill for some apple treats
- Rainbow Orchards – When I get a serious craving for sweets, nothing satisfies it like freshly fried hot apple cider donuts with a cup of hot apple cider to wash it down
- Bodhaine at Drew Bean Farms – Grab a slice of their award-winning blackberry apple sourcream pie and take home a frozen pie for the holidays
- Apple Ridge Farms- Get the Apple Ridge Sundae with vanilla ice cream, apple donuts, peanuts, whipped cream, and caramel
Enjoy gorgeous views with the famous Walkin’ Pie

Apple Hill can get busy, and Delfino Farms is the perfect escape from the crowds with its stunning views of the pine forest and the rows of vineyards.
They are one part winery, one part hard cider house, and most importantly the home to Joan’s Apple Bakery.
They offer several different hand-crafted pies, but the star of the show is their Walkin’ Pie which is an individual apple pie that is topped with cider sauce and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Go wine tasting
What most people do not know is that Apple Hill is as much a wine-producing region as it is an apple-growing area.
In fact, there are some amazing wines being produced literally on the same property or next door to many apple farms.
Take advantage of this incredible opportunity to taste these amazing high-elevation wines, that are made by some seriously talented winemakers at wineries like Madroña Vineyards or Edio Vineyards.
A list of the recommended wineries you should visit can be found below.
Visit a local brewery
After a day of braving the crowds at the apple farms, one of the best things to do in Apple Hill is to stop by one of these local craft breweries and take the edge off with a pint.
Both of the breweries offer up great outdoor areas to kick back and relax and take in the fresh mountain air while you taste through their current selections on tap.
Make sure to pick up a six-pack or a growler to take with you for the holidays.
- Jack Russell Farm Brewery – This brewery has been an Apple Hill staple for over 20 years and is well known for its fruit-flavored ales.
- Highway 50 Brewery – Stop by and enjoy a Highway 50 IPA with views from their deck across the adjacent valley.
Best Apple Hill Farms to Visit
When planning a trip to Apple Hill, you may only hit a few farms before you are stuffed with tasty apple desserts, and your car is loaded with tons of take-home treats.
This means that you will want to visit the best farms that will provide your family or friends with the most fun for your day in the mountains.
The perfect Apple Hill Farm will have a combination of delicious food, fun activities, great facilities, and those fall harvest vibes that make this place so special.
1. Boa Vista Orchards

- Best For: This one-stop shop offers everything you could want all at one farm
- Open: 7:30 am – 6 pm
This is one of the busiest farms in Apple Hill for a reason, as they offer up a little of something for everyone.
They have all of the delicious ubiquitous bakery staples like apple fritters, blueberry donuts, and freshly baked pies.
They also have a large marketplace with countless products ranging from bacon-flavored syrups to apple wines in several flavors.
I love that they offer free samples of their different apple varieties so I can try them before purchasing.
I would highly recommend visiting during the week if you can as lines can get insane on the weekends which takes away from the experience.
Whatever you do, make sure to try one of their apple donut ice cream sandwiches before you leave.
Things to do at Boa Vista
- Eat apple donut ice cream sandwiches
- Taste their estate apple wines and other products
- Visit their pumpkin patch for Halloween
2. High Hill Ranch

- Best For: A carnival-like atmosphere with countless vendors, shops, and restaurants
- Open: 9 am to 5 pm
If I’m being completely honest, this Apple Hill farm can be a zoo, especially on weekends, but that is half the fun as they offer so much to do all in one place.
If you can handle the crowds or you visit later in the season, this can be a great place for families with kids as they pull out all the stops including fishing ponds, tractor-pulled hay rides, and even pony rides.
If they offer anything at other Apple Hill orchards, they have it at High Hill Ranch and it’s all high quality.
Make sure to try one of their outrageous caramel apples that are coated with a myriad of toppings like smores or m&ms and their apple fritter ice cream sandwich.
Things to do at High Hill Ranch
- Shop for presents from one of their 75 craft vendors
- Eat sweets from the fudge factory
- Catch some trout in their well-stocked pond
3. Apple Ridge Farms

- Best For: Escaping the crowds with more of a country vibe
- Open: 10 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm on weekends
What I love about visiting Apple Ridge Farms is that it’s a smaller farm which is a great option for those that want the full Apple Hill experience but without the madness of some of the bigger facilities.
Apple Ridge Farms offers up a great bakehouse with all the apple treats like apple pies and donuts, and they also offer some savory offerings like bbq tri-tip or pulled pork sandwiches.
I’ve taken my nephew here as they have several options for entertainment for kids.
They have a nature walk, an area where they can pan for gems, a maze to get lost in, and a pumpkin patch where they can select their future jack-o’-lantern.
If you eat one thing at this farm, I recommend that you get the Apple Ridge sundae, which is vanilla ice cream served over an apple donut with all the fixings.
Things to do at Apple Ridge Farms
- Support local craft makers and artists vendors
- Let the kids navigate the maze and pan for gems
- Take cute photos in the painted cutouts
4. Larsen Apple Barn

- Best For: A serious apple farm that is stuck in the past
- Open: 9 am to 5 pm but closed on Saturdays
Larsen Apple Barn is all about their 13 varieties of apples that are harvested throughout the Autumn.
They supply the best restaurants in the region with cases of their apples as their apple orchards produce some great fruit.
As a chef, I’ve used them on several of my menus as the quality of their apples always delivers.
The facilities include a serious bake shop that cranks out some great pies and dumplings. They also have a museum that provides a glimpse of the historic past of Apple Hill.
This might not be the best place to keep the whole family entertained, but they do sell apples by the case at really good prices.
Things to do at Larsen Apple Barn
- Explore all of the antique equipment, cars, and museum exhibits
- Eat a slice of their cream cheese apple pie
- Shop for boxes of apples at great prices
5. Rainbow Orchards

- Best For: A perfect spot to relax and eat yourself sick on apple donuts
- Open: 9 am to 5 pm from Sept. 3-5, and Sept 10th to Nov. 5th; then 9 am to 4 pm Nov. 6th – Nov. 27th
Rainbow Orchards is a great option if your vision for a trip to Apple Hill includes visiting a small farm that is surrounded by nature and its fall foliage.
This apple farm does not offer a collection of crafts or a ton of manufactured entertainment for the kids, but it does provide a somewhat authentic apple harvest experience.
The kids can play on the hay bails while the adults eat hot link corn dogs and bbq sandwiches with a hard cider.
The best part is that you can shop for apples if you just want to experience what nature intended this amazing fruit to taste like.
This is my favorite place to get apple cider donuts without having to deal with the crowds.
Things to do at Rainbow Orchards
- Eat the best apple donuts in Apple Hill
- Shop for apples from their orchard
- Hangout and snack on some apple grub in their picnic area
6. Pine-O-Mine Ranch

- Best For: Experiencing picking your own fruit right from the tree
- Open: 3 pm to 8pm Fridays, and 11 am to 6 pm Saturdays and Sundays
- U-Pick Apple Farm
Visiting this apple farm is all about connecting to where our food comes from and getting to pick your own fruit right from the apple trees.
These are the kind of experiences that create memories that last a lifetime.
They offer several varieties to harvest and it only costs $3 per person and $3 per pound for the apples that you pick.
I love that the atmosphere is very laid-back and not as busy as the other farms in the area.
After picking all the apples you can eat, you can grab a cold pint of craft beer or cider and enjoy some bbq while sitting surrounded by orchards and pine trees.
Things to do at Pine-O-mine Ranch
- Pick your own apples and hunt for the perfect Halloween pumpkin
- Sip on a pint of craft beer or cider
- Go for a hay ride through the orchard
7. Denver Dan’s Apple Patch

- Best For: A hands-on experience with an old-time country feel
- Open: 9 am to 5 pm Friday to Sunday, and Monday holidays
- U-Pick Apple Farm
Denver Dan’s is a great place to visit for the whole family as they offer up plenty of entertainment for the kids including a petting zoo, and they can even pick their own apples in the orchard.
Make this place a priority if you want a quaint visit to Apple Hill away from the droves of people at the big farms that are closer to the highway.
This is one of my favorite apple farms to visit year after year.
You won’t be disappointed as they have a great bakeshop with all of the sweet treats you could want, along with pastry-wrapped chicken and beef pasties if you are burnt out on sugar.
Things to do at Denver Dan’s Apple Patch
- Meet lamas and other animals at their petting zoo
- Shop for locally made jams, fruit butters, and syrups
- Eat one of their famous chicken or beef pasties
8. O’Halloran’s Apple Trail Ranch

- Best For: For a quiet place away from the crowds, this is a good place to go
- Open: 9 am to 5 pm
O’Halloran’s is a legit working apple farm and Christmas tree farm, and not a made-for-tourism facility.
This small apple orchard will make you feel like you are actually visiting a farm with its own farmstand where you can hand select your apples from the 16 varieties they grow on the property.
If you visit before Halloween, you can pick out a pumpkin, and if you come after Thanksgiving, you can cut your own Christmas tree.
What you won’t find here will be a manufactured experience with kids’ entertainment or sugary baked goods, but you will get an authentic farmstand experience.
Things to do at O’Halloran’s Apple Trail Ranch
- Shop for 16 varieties of apples
- Pick out the perfect jack-o’-lantern pumpkin
- Cut down your own Christmas tree
Apple HiIl Wineries

Apple Hill sits smack dab in the middle of the El Dorado American Viticultural Area where apple orchards sit right next to wine grape vineyards.
This area is home to some really talented winemakers that specialize in making stunning high-elevation mountain wines.
These wineries are typically smaller and a lot more personable than the ones you will find in big wine regions like Napa.
This means that it’s not common to step up to the wine tasting bar and be greeted by the owner or winemaker.
These may be small-town wineries, but they produce some world-class wines.
Chateau Davell
This sustainable producer makes incredible wines by putting as much effort into the vines as they do the wine.
Tastings at this small boutique winery change on a daily basis as the only produce small batches of each wine that are made from their estate vineyard.
The owners/ winemakers are super friendly and the artwork on their wine labels are as beautiful as the wines are delicious.
Stop by on a Friday evening after visiting the apple orchards for wine, wood-fired pizzas, and live music.
- Tasting Cost & Info – $10 for a flight of six pre-selected wines. If you buy a bottle the tasting fee will be waived.
Boeger Winery

This is the biggest name in wine in El Dorado and they even used to serve their wines in the White House during the Regan era.
This winery offers a wide selection of wine covering an array of different varietals including recognizable favorites like their crisp Sauvignon Blanc, and lesser-known varietals like the jammy Primitivo.
This is the biggest winery in the area, but it still has a small-town charm and doesn’t feel commercial.
- Tasting Cost & Info – Guided tastings are $15 per person and require an advanced reservation. Self-guided wine flights are $10 and available for walk-ins.
Bumgarner Winery
This winery produces the area’s best red wines including Bordeaux-style blends that are stunningly good.
Their tasting room is situated in a barn amongst several fig trees, which will make you really feel Apple Hill’s country charm.
If you want to experience what world-class high elevation Cabernet Sauvignon tastes like without the luxury Napa prices, then this is a must-visit.
If you are only going to visit one winery at Apple Hill, make sure it’s Bumgarner.
- Tasting Cost & Info – Tasting runs $12 per person and is waived with the purchase of two bottles. Reservations are required.
Tips for Visiting Apple Hill

Avoid the weekends if at all possible
Apple Hill can be an absolute zoo at times, as the majority of the 1.2 million annual visitors visit on the weekends in October.
This leads to major traffic on the tiny side roads and causes hour-long lines to buy apple donuts at some farms.
Visit during the week or visit smaller farms away from Highway 50 to avoid crowds.
Check out the official Apple Hill Facebook Page to get up-to-date information on farm hours.
Plan accordingly
As the roads in Apple Hill can get really congested during harvest season, it’s a good idea to plot out your route in advance to prevent getting stuck in too much traffic.
Use google to look up the fastest route the night before, then plan on taking a different route going the opposite direction.
This will most likely keep you from taking the same route as everyone else.
Check out this Apple Hill map for the list of all farms.
Dress appropriately
Be prepared for the mountainous weather which is colder than the valley and can change in a moment.
Make sure to pack a jacket and other warm clothes just in case it’s colder than you expected.
Also, make sure that you bring a good stable pair of shoes if you hope to pick your own apples in the orchards as the ground can be soft and uneven.
Bring cash
Not all Apple Hill farms take credit or debit cards, and many of the small vendors only take cash.
Many of the vendors may take cards but ask that you kindly use cash as they get charged a fee and it will force them to raise their prices if not enough people pay with cash.
Bring an ice chest
Even if you do not plan on buying a bunch of food to take with you like frozen pies, you will most likely change your mind after you try your first slice.
Bring an ice chest to help keep all the tasty food (and wine) that you scored frozen or cold so that it doesn’t go bad while you are enjoying your time at the farms.
This will keep you from having to rush home after you buy something.
