We really enjoy that they offer up some lesser-known varietals like Fiano, which is an assertive white wine grape originally from Campana, Italy.

Revolution Winery and Kitchen is located on a block on S Street along with legendary Sacramento purveyors like Temple Coffee, Pushkins Bakery, and the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op.

The best part about this Sacramento winery is its great patio, which has plenty of energy while remaining laid back enough for a wine tasting.

Come for their weekend brunch and stick around to taste some wine.

It offers a perfect destination to kick off a date night or a place to grab a glass of wine before a basketball game or concert at the Golden One Center.

While they are located far away from the wine country, we really enjoyed our experience of wine tasting in downtown Sacramento.

  • Food offerings: Charcuterie/Cheese box
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes

Acheson is anything but ordinary, and the tasting room feels more like a kicked-back brewery in Sacramento than a prissy winery.

They serve a fun lineup of drink now wines ranging from a crisp and acidic Albarino to a meaty Cabernet Sauvignon, which over delivers for the price point.

Stop by Acheson, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the friendly team that is engaging and happy to share insights about their wines.

We love that they serve their wine on tap, reducing packaging waste while eliminating the chance of customers receiving wines affected by cork taint.

Local Tip: This is one of the Sacramento wineries where you can buy a bottle to-go that you can return to have refilled with the wine of your choice from the tap.

4. Lucid Winery (Downtown)

  • Wine Tasting: Tasting of five 1.5-ounce pours (see menu)
  • Food offerings: cheese & charcuterie, small snacks
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes
  • Dog-friendly: Yes

Lucid is a fairly new winery in the Sacramento area, and they are making a big splash with many of their wines earning medals at the San Francisco Chronicle wine competition.

The tasting room is inside a large warehouse space with minimalistic decor, allowing us to focus on the wine and our conversation.

There was plenty to talk about, as several of their wines offered profiles that are unique and outside of what you would typically expect from the varietals we tried.

Of the Sacramento area wineries,  they are the only ones offering natural wines, which makes for an interesting tasting experience that is playful and fun.

In the back of the tasting room is a small space with a library of books, where you can relax and sip some wine if you want to enjoy a glass in private.

Lucid is situated on the R Street Corridor, which is a popular nightlife area with several pubs and craft cocktail bars in the immediate area.

This makes Lucid a fun destination for a date night or a perfect spot to taste wines and listen to live music before a night on the town.

5. Baker Family Wines (West Sacramento)

  • Wine Tasting: A tasting flight of four wines
  • Food offerings: Scheduled food trucks
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes
  • Dog-friendly: Yes

Baker Family Wines is a winning combination of one of the best managers in Baseball history and Chik Brenneman, who formally was a professor and winemaker at UC Davis.

This small winery and tasting room is located in an industrial area in West Sacramento and is next door neighbors with Bike Dog Brewing Company.

While the tasting room lacks some personality, the wines more than makeup for the lack of atmosphere you would get at a vineyard in the wine country.

On top of the amazing wines, the winemaker even stepped out to greet us and was more than generous in answering our questions.

We really enjoyed their Syrah, made from grapes sourced from Dusty Baker’s property in Placer County.

Baker Family Wines seems to have a great relationship with Bike Dog Brewing as they share visiting food trucks and events like live music on Friday nights.

Local Tip: This is a great option for a great stop to pick up some amazing wine, along with great beer from Bike Dog Brewing, for a camping trip near Sacramento or a trip to the coast.

6. The Underground Tasting Room (Old Sacramento)

  • Wine Tasting: Flight of five wines (red, white, rose)
  • Food offerings: cheese & charcuterie board
  • Outdoor Seating: No
  • Dog-friendly: No

This multi-winery tasting room is tucked inside Pioneer Square, on a sublevel below the wooden boardwalk in Old Sacramento.

This unique tasting room offers a chance to taste wines from Fenton Herriott Vineyards and Rendez-vous Winery before dinner at one of the riverfront restaurants.

While the location in Sacramento’s historic district made visiting this tasting room a fun experience, we also enjoyed tasting wines from two different growing regions.

Fenton Herriott Vineyards is located in the El Dorado wine region on the outskirts of Placerville and is a fun additional stop during a visit to Apple Hill.

Rendez-vous Winery is based in the Clarksburg wine region, and they also have a tasting room at the Old Sugar Mill.

The drive alone out to the winery along the small country roads ensures that when you arrive, you will be nice, relaxed, and ready to try their delicious lineup of wines.

We were lucky enough to visit when the weather was perfect, and we opted to sit on the outdoor patio, which overlooks their Tempranillo vineyards.

The winery not only has six Matchbook-labeled wines, but they also have several other brands in their portfolio

You can opt for one of their wines from their “Tinto Rey” brand, which includes their Spanish varietals, or go for a Pinot or Chardonnay from their “Mossback” label.

Our favorite was their Arsonist Red Blend, an assertive Bordeaux-style blend with robust flavors and aromas accentuated by the ripe fruit from this warm growing region.

Make sure to grab a few bottles or a case to take home, as the wines are very good, especially for the super reasonable prices compared to other wineries near Sacramento.

8. Grindstone Wines (Dunnigan Hills)

  • Food offerings: None, outside food allowed except on event days

This boutique winery located in the Dunnigan Hills is a hidden gem that is a much visit for a day of wine tasting in Yolo County.

Grindstone Wines is one of the wineries close to Sacramento that has a laid-back country vibe that embodies the region’s agricultural heritage, and the tasting room is very comfortable and lacks pretension

We decided to sip our tasting flight outdoors, where we could enjoy the park-like setting by the giant valley oak trees.

The owners strategically intertwined their experience in agriculture and identified the perfect location based on the soil composition and climate for growing highly stressed vines.

This shows up in Petite Verdot, which is full-bodied and features concentrated fruit aromas.

For a fun night in the country with great wine and music, head out to the winery during their summer live music series

Make sure to plan a visit to the Dunnigan Hills and come support this charming family-owned winery.

9. Berryessa Gap (Winters)

  • Wine Tasting: Tasting flight of five wines (red, white, rose)
  • Food offerings: Spanish tapas (downtown)
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes
  • Dog-friendly: Yes
  • Distance from Sacramento: 31 miles, 35 mins

Berryessa Gap got its start in the wine industry selling rootstock in 1969, and they make some of the best wine in the Winters Highlands wine region.

The winery offers two options for tastings in the Winters area, each with a completely different feel and ambiance.

The first option is to book a tasting at the winery, which offers up great outdoor seating and views of the vineyards and the coastal range.

We actually preferred visiting their downtown Winters tasting room because of its location.

Berryessa Gap is a great stop before exploring the shops and great restaurants within blocks of the tasting room.

They offer two different options for your tasting, and we highly recommend that you spring for the premium option, which includes some of their small lot wines and higher-end options.

No matter which tasting room you visit, you will have a fun experience and some excellent wines.

Local Tip: Stop by the winery to pick up a few fun bottles after hiking at Lake Berryessa or for a picnic at Putah Creek.

10. Turkovich Family Wines (Winters)

  • Food offerings: Selection of cheeses
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes
  • Dog-friendly: Yes
  • Distance from Sacramento: 31.1 miles, 35 mins

Turkovich Family Winery offers two unique destinations to taste their amazing limited-production wines.

You can make a tasting reservation at their location in downtown Winters, or you can choose to visit the winery, which is nestled amongst the orchards north of the city.

Their Winters tasting room offers everything you could want from a downtown tasting room, with a warm and inviting atmosphere and two great outdoor seating areas.

The tasting room is also within a few blocks of several great restaurants, bars, and a brewery, making this a fun destination for a night out with friends or a date night.

The tasting room at the winery offers a chance to embrace its country location, with views of the Vaca Mountains from its nicely appointed patio.

What we love most about Turkovich is that they heavily emphasize wine varietals from the Rhone region of France which grow well in the region.

This results in some great white wines, including a Rousanne, a Viognier, and a GSM red blend with Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre.

Make sure to book a tasting at this relatively young family winery that is making a big splash in this up-and-coming wine region.

11. Great Bear Vineyards (Davis)

  • Wine Tasting: Tasting of five wines
  • Food offerings: Outside food allowed except when scheduled food trucks are on-site
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes
  • Dog-friendly: No, only service dogs allowed
  • Distance from Sacramento: 17 miles, 22 mins

Located just north of the city of Davis, Great Bear Vineyards is garnering lots of acclaim for its complex and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon.

Don’t worry, they also show off the diversity of their skills at winemaking by offering up a well rounded lineup of wines ranging from a sparkling rose to a crisp Sauvignon Blanc.

For our visit to the winery, we opted just to book their wine-tasting experience, which included five wines, but we found out that they offer an impressive calendar of events and pairing options.

You can enjoy their reserve wine and barrel tasting or book a cheese and wine pairing on their gorgeous patio.

For an extra special treat, they stay open late on Fridays for live music and wines by the glass with a backdrop of the sunset over the Vaca Mountains.

If you love big fruit forward California style Cabernet Sauvignon as much as we do, you will fall head over heels for Great Bear Vineyards.

LOCAL TIP: If you’re visiting in October, there is a cool pumpkin patch in this area that you should check out as well as a spooky haunted house.

Clarksburg Wineries

The Clarksburg wine region may be only partially in Sac County, but they are the best place to visit the vineyards near Sacramento, CA.

This small wine region offers a boutique alternative to the glitz and glam and mega wineries in Napa

Visiting these wineries around Sacramento will include a drive through agricultural areas and a decent chance that the winemaker or owner may serve you your wine tasting.

Don’t head to Clarksburg looking for 100 million dollar wineries or Michelin starred dining, as you will be disappointed, but you will find some amazing wines and even better hospitality.

This is one of our go-to wine destinations for a fun getaway from the city to taste some wine.

12. Old Sugar Mill

red brick building
  • Wine Tasting: Varies by the winery
  • Food offerings: Scheduled food trucks on weekends
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes
  • Dog-friendly: No

Why go to just one winery when you can visit the Old Sugar Mill, which is home to 14 of Clarksburg’s best wineries?

Under one roof, you will find a diverse selection of wineries ranging from boutique to highly awarded natural wine producers.

Located just 17 miles south of Downtown Sacramento, this old sugar refinery was turned into the epicenter of the Clarksburg Wine region.

We have enjoyed several visits to pick up some bottles after kayaking at the Cosumnes River Preserve, but we have also stuck around to enjoy live music and food trucks on special event nights.

This is a great destination for newbies to wine tasting, as the informal and casual environment is a perfect place to learn to swirl and sip.

If you have been dreaming about an afternoon of tasting in Clarksburg, make this your first and last stop and skip the extra driving.

13. Bogle Family Winery

  • Wine Tasting: Tasting of five wines
  • Food offerings: Charcuterie box
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes
  • Dog-friendly: No

Bogle is a powerhouse winery and is the largest producer in the Clarksburg AVA growing region.

You may be familiar with this brand as they can be found at retail outlets throughout the region, but a visit to their tasting room offers an opportunity to taste some of their smaller lot wines.

When we visited, we were pleasantly surprised by a sweet Moscato and a crisp Chenin Blanc that was like biting into a fresh melon.

While the wines were fun and interesting during our visit, the best was enjoying our wine outdoors under the pine trees looking out over the Chardonnay vineyards.

Visitors can book an afternoon picnic at one of the tables in this seating area, where they set you up with take-home wine glasses and two bottles from their list.

If you love big fruit-forward red wines, Bogle will impress with blockbusters like their assertive but balanced Cabernet Sauvignon and a jammy Old Vine Zinfandel.

Bogle offers a perfect introduction to the wineries around Sacramento, with a balance of good wines and the familiarity you get with a well known winery.

  • Wine Tasting: 3 different flights of four wines each
  • Food offerings: small bites, cheese boards, wood-fired pizzas
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes
  • Dog-friendly: Yes, in the patio or picnic area

Scribner Bend Vineyards should be at the top of the list for Clarksburg wineries, especially for those looking for a local winery near Sacramento with a country vibe and interesting wines.

The winery is just steps from the Sacramento River, and the drive to the winery is as nice as the visit.

On weekends, the Sacramento institution Paesano’s sets up shop, slinging pizzas and salads for guests to snack on while they sip their wines.

You can opt for a basic tasting or upgrade your experience with a barrel room tour, where you will learn and taste your way from vine to glass.

We enjoyed this winery’s list of unique and diverse varietals, ranging from a highly awarded Nero d’ Avola to their Pinotage, which is a wine grape from South Africa.

Scribner Bend offers a perfect destination for wine tasting near Sacramento, where you can try some new wines and enjoy the beautiful setting nestled up against the vineyards.

15. Julietta Winery

  • Wine Tasting: Tasting of four wines of either red or white wine
  • Food offerings: cheese, cured meats, crackers
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes
  • Dog-friendly: Yes

Julietta offers a nice change of pace, away from the mega producers and touristy spots that are more of a party than a quaint day of enjoying the Clarksburg wine region.

This is a family run operation, and when we visited, the owners were in the tasting room greeting guests and sharing their wines.

We instantly felt like we were visiting a friend’s business and felt comfortable relaxing and taking all the time we needed to get to know the wines.

Julietta Winery is 15 miles south of Downtown Sacramento in a gorgeous but rural part of Clarksburg, further adding to the relaxed atmosphere.

They offer an impressive lineup of estate wines and others where they source the grapes from great vineyards ranging from Napa to Paso Robles.

You will surely get to try familiar wines like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, but you will also find some more obscure varietals like Petit Verdot in your tasting lineup.

Julietta Winery also offers a full menu of gourmet sandwiches, salads, soups, and desserts for a picnic at the winery.

For a fun wine tasting near Sacramento, stop by Julietta Winery.

This small winery is located just over the levee from the Sacramento River and offers an idyllic setting for wine tasting.

The tasting room is inside a refurbished barn, reflecting this wine region’s rustic nature.

In contrast, Miner’s Leap Winery’s outdoor areas offer a park-like setting where you can enjoy the breezes off the river while sipping your wine flight.

This outdoor area is where they host their renowned summer concert series, where they host local musicians for some evening fun under the stars.

They feature all the popular varietals that Clarksburg is well known for, including tempranillo, which benefits from the region’s summer heat.

This is also one of the closest wineries to Sacramento on this list, at only 10 miles from downtown, and is close to several great hotel options off Highway 5, including the Freeport Wine Country Inn

Wine Tasting in Sacramento

Why taste wine from just one winery when you can visit one of these incredible wine bars in Sacramento?

They each offer an impressive lineup of carefully curated offerings ranging from natural wines to options from wine regions worldwide.

Most of these wine bars offer food options to pair with your meal, and they also serve other beverages for your friends or family members that do not share your passion for wine.

All of these wine bars are located inside the city of Sacramento, with many being within walking distance of each other.

If you hope to visit multiple wine bars in an afternoon, grab a half glass and a snack at your first stop, and then visit a second location for another round.

17. 58 Degrees & Holding Co.

  • Wine Tasting: Local and imported wines by the glass
  • Food offerings: full menu, cheese & charcuterie boards, small bites, pizza
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes

Located on one of the hippest blocks in Sacramento, 58 Degrees has been a fixture for the area’s wine fans and industry professionals looking for a great spot to test their palettes.

58 Degrees offers 15 wines by the glass from around the world, making this a great place to experiment with some new varietals and growing regions.

This has been our go-to spot for a chance to taste a combination of old-world and new-world wines.

They also offer a well-curated list of cocktails and craft beer if you plan to visit with a non-wine drinker.

We first went in expecting some light bites like charcuterie and cheese boards, but we were pleasantly surprised to find that they offered a full menu, which is atypical for a wine bar.

If you are a wine geek or a newbie to the world of wine, this is a great spot for a glass at the bar or on their patio overlooking 18th Street.

18. Ro Sham Beaux

black door opening to a wine bar in sacramento
  • Wine Tasting: By the glass, local and imported wines
  • Food offerings: small snacks, sandwiches, salads, and cheeses
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes

Ro Sham Beaux is quickly becoming one of the hottest destinations to kick back and enjoy some great wines in Sacramento.

They started with the idea of serving only natural wines, which means that they are minimally processed, allowing the grapes and the soil to be the star of the show.

Their rotating wine by the glass list is complimented by a fun menu featuring plenty of small bites meant to be snacks or small bites.

We were pleasantly surprised to see tinned fish like you will find in Spain, including sardines and olive oil cured tuna.

The space is intimate, which means that the staff was able to assist and educate us about the wine selections.

This is a must-visit for wine fans curious about natural wines or anyone wanting a hip location to enjoy a night in midtown.

19. The Rind

  • Wine Tasting: Wines by the glass
  • Food offerings: Selection of cheeses, charcuterie, grilled cheese sandwiches, mac & cheese, dessert
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes

In our opinion, the Rind is the best wine bar in Sacramento and has been one of our favorite spots for a night out in town.

We were instantly hooked when we realized that this is a cheese shop that just happens to have a great wine list.

While the wine selection is a big draw, the star of the show is their Twisted Classic grilled cheese sandwich with a five-year cheddar that pairs well with any Cabernet that shows up on their list.

Grab a seat at the bar, where the staff will offer suggestions from their rotating cheese list, including options from local creameries to European producers.

If you are looking for a perfect destination to sip some wine and eat some cheese with friends over a good conversation, then you found your ideal wine bar.

20. Nico Wine

  • Wine Tasting: By the glass, natural wines
  • Food offerings: none
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes

Nico Wine is a newcomer to the Sacramento wine bar scene, but they are making a splash at their amazing location in the Ice Blocks neighborhood.

This wine bar fits in well in this area, which has become a hotbed for nightlife with craft cocktail bars, hip restaurants, dessert shops, and some of the best Sacramento coffee shops.

Nico jumped on the natural wines trend, aiming to share these low-intervention wines and help these producers get the recognition they deserve.

To make the most of an evening at Nico, visit on an evening when the weather is pleasant and grab a seat on their patio.

This minimalist wine bar is a perfect first stop for a glass of natural wine before a night on the town.

21. Good News Wine

  • Outdoor Seating: No

Good News Wine offers a fun destination for wine tasting in the Marrs Building on one of the hottest blocks in the city.

This wine bar took over the former Block Bar spot and was transformed into a hip wine shop, which stands in contrast to the party vibe at Low Brau next door.

Good News Wine offers a small but well-curated list of wines by the glass, alongside a few selections of sherry and vermouth.

The first thing that stuck out to us during our visit was the design of the space, which gives off the feel of an old school diner with a modern twist.

The space also has a small market with plenty of gourmet pantry items, wines, craft beer, and sherry to take home.

22. Betty Wine Bar & Bottle Shop

outdoor patio with bench and chairs
4 bottles of wine on a table for wine tasting
  • Wine Tasting: Wines by the glass
  • Food offerings: salads and sandwiches
  • Outdoor Seating: Yes

Betty Wine Bar is an oasis of wine in Southside Park in the heart of Downtown Sacramento.

This is a quintessential neighborhood destination away from the nightlife hubs in the city, which offers a kicked back environment to meet with friends for a glass of wine or two.

While the menu was small, we enjoyed the thoughtful and focused offerings, which were substantial enough to keep us satiated.

The wines by the glass list are also on the small side, but we found the options playful and interesting enough to keep it from feeling incomplete.

If you plan to venture downtown for a pre-dinner drink, stop by and try out some of their fun bites like the Sputino, which riffs off the snacks served for aperitivo in Italy.

This is a perfect destination in downtown if you are looking for a quaint wine bar with a relaxed atmosphere.

  • Wine Tasting: Various flight options, wines by the glass
  • Food offerings: small bites, cheese & charcuterie boards, panini

We stumbled across Fizz Champagne Bar on our way to a concert at the Golden 1 Center, which is just steps away.

Since we first found the place, we have been back multiple times to enjoy some bubbles and oysters on their front patio when the weather is nice.

Make this a classy first stop for an evening of sipping Champagne in the DOCO entertainment district, and stay downtown at one of the luxury suite hotels nearby.
